Technical Notes: Commissioned by the Columbia Concert Band, "Columbia Vision" was made possible by a grant from The Columbia Foundation and is an exciting original composition from the pen of Dave Black. The piece was commissioned in honor of the 30th birthday of the "new city" of Columbia, Maryland, a planned community envisioned by developer James Rouse "as a place where new systems of education, health, religion, community organizations, new relationships among people, new solutions for children, youth, older people, and new support for family life" could flourish. A highly descriptive piece, the dramatic fanfare and stately processional that follows conjure up images of ceremonial grandeur. After the return of the opening fanfare, the piece concludes with unrelenting energy and drive utilizing the syncopated rhythms, counter lines and interesting harmonies that are often found in Dave Black's work. The keyboard percussion part is labeled "Mallets (Xylophone, Bells, Triangle)". The percussion part is labeled "Percussion Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Crash Cymbals, Bell Tree)".
